Dog Bite Injury

Pittsburgh PA Dog Bite Injury Lawyers

If you or a friend or family member is interested in more information concerning a dog bite injury, contact Logue Law Group at (724) 350-8995 in order to talk to one of our experienced and dedicated injury lawyers.

As much as humans tend to love dogs (they are “man’s best friend”) we tend to forget that they are animals, and sometimes can act unpredictably, especially without proper training. Even a dog who has never attacked before can snap at a moment’s notice. Approximately 4.5 million people are bit by dogs annually, and nearly 1 out of 5 become infected causing further medical trauma. Also, the average cost of a dog bite-related hospital stay was $18,200, about 50% higher than the average injury-related hospital stay. This is due to the fact that many tests must be run to check for several infections as well as cleaning and sanitizing everything carefully to prevent further infections.

Sometimes these cases become complicated due to the fact that many dog bites occur from a dog that you are familiar with. In 2016, 42%, of all dog bite fatality victims were either visiting or living temporarily with the dog's owner when the fatal attack occurred. You as a victim are entitled to certain compensations to make sure that you are able to cover your medical bills as well as pain and suffering and also to be sure that no one else has to endure the same injury in the future.

The types of injuries that can occur from a dog bite can be very serious and include, but are not limited to:

  • Fractured bones
  • Infections such as rabies
  • Lacerations needing stitches or staples
    • Sometimes these lacerations need extensive surgeries to repair
  • Severe facial injuries
  • Permanent scars
  • Severation of limbs and other extremities
  • Permanent disability
  • Death

There are laws concerning dog bites for a reason, as there are many dangers of keeping animals that are able to severely injure us. Especially when a dog does not have all of its vaccinations or is not trained properly, the victim is entitled to compensation as well as making sure that there are not additional victims.

Because dogs will always be a part of our lives, especially because of the love and loyalty they typically bring us, there are steps we can take to be sure that we do not incur these attacks.

Tips for dog safety:

  • Because they are animals, they are unpredictable, so always be cautious when around dogs, especially those you have not met before
  • Watch children around any dogs as children do not always understand that a dog can attack them or will attack them
  • Explain to children to not mess with a dog’s face and head area as this is where they tend to be defensive as well as their backside where they cannot see and may be protective of
  • Never bother a dog while it is eating, especially to get near its face
  • Be careful when playing, as dogs tend to get in a mode where they think of hunting and forget you are not their prey
  • Do not assume that a dog will not attack simply because you know the dog or they are typically calm
  • If a dog presents any of the following warning signs that they do not typically present, then back off and give them space
    • Heavy panting for no apparent heat reason
    • Shaking or hiding their head away from people
    • Ears standing back against their head
    • The fur on the back of their neck standing up
    • Tail tucked between the legs
    • Baring their teeth and/or growling

Because dogs are so important to many people and often times viewed as family members, we want to try to prevent any type of injury caused by a dog, but because they do happen and victims are entitled to compensation and justice, please call Logue Law Group at (724) 350-8995 to speak with an experienced and dedicated attorney today
