Ozempic and Wegovy Vision Loss and NAION Claims

Sudden vision loss or a rapid change in eyesight needs urgent medical attention. Some people who used Ozempic or Wegovy have asked whether semaglutide could be related to a serious eye injury, including non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). The European Medicines Agency’s safety committee concluded in June 2025 that NAION is a very rare side effect of semaglutide medicines. That safety finding does not establish the cause of an individual person’s vision loss or prove a legal claim. Logue Law Group reviews Ozempic and Wegovy injury matters and works with leading national mass-tort firms to assess claims based on the medical records and applicable law.

Vision changes: seek care first

If you experience sudden vision loss, a new dark or blurry area, or quickly worsening eyesight, contact an eye-care professional or emergency service promptly. Do not wait for a legal consultation. A doctor can determine whether the cause is NAION, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, stroke, another eye condition, or something unrelated to semaglutide. Do not start, stop, or change a medicine based on this page; follow a qualified clinician’s instructions.

What is NAION?

NAION stands for non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. It is an optic-nerve condition associated with reduced blood flow to the nerve. It can cause sudden vision changes and needs prompt medical assessment. Several health factors and other possible causes may be relevant. Only a qualified clinician can diagnose NAION and evaluate its cause in a particular patient.

In June 2025, the European Medicines Agency’s Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) reviewed available non-clinical, clinical-trial, post-marketing, and medical-literature information. PRAC concluded that NAION is a very rare side effect of semaglutide medicines, meaning it may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people taking semaglutide, and recommended updating EU product information. This is an EU medication-safety determination; it is not a finding about every patient’s case and does not substitute for U.S. product labeling or individual medical evaluation.

NAION and diabetic retinopathy are different conditions

People sometimes use “blindness” to describe several different kinds of vision injury. NAION affects the optic nerve. Diabetic retinopathy affects blood vessels in the retina and is associated with diabetes. These conditions have different mechanisms, diagnoses, and treatment considerations. They should not be conflated in a medical or legal review.

FDA prescribing information for Ozempic reports diabetic-retinopathy complications in a two-year clinical trial involving adults with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk: events occurred in 3.0% of Ozempic-treated participants and 1.8% of placebo participants. The label states that patients with a history of diabetic retinopathy should be monitored for progression. Those trial figures describe that study population; they do not establish the risk for every patient, nor do they establish that semaglutide caused a particular person’s eye condition.

Vision loss and legal review

A product-liability review looks at the specific medicine and dose, the treatment timeline, the diagnosis, other possible causes, product information in effect at the relevant time, and the injury’s effect on the person’s life. Depending on the facts and jurisdiction, a claim may involve questions about warnings, product design, causation, and damages. A diagnosis alone does not establish that a product caused the condition or that a lawsuit can be filed.

For an Ozempic or Wegovy vision-loss review, counsel may ask whether available records document:

  • The exact product used, dose history, and start and stop dates
  • When vision symptoms began and how they changed
  • Eye-care examinations, imaging, testing, and the treating clinician’s diagnosis
  • Diabetes history, prior eye conditions, other health factors, and other medications
  • Treatment, hospitalization, functional limitations, expenses, and future care
  • Warnings and safety information available at the relevant time

Medical records should be handled carefully. Ask the firm how to provide them securely; do not send sensitive health information through an unsecured form or email unless instructed to do so.

Records that may help preserve the timeline

After obtaining care, keep copies of prescriptions and pharmacy records, medication packaging if available, eye-care records, imaging and test reports, hospital records, and bills. Write down when you first noticed symptoms, what changed, and when you sought care. If family members or coworkers observed changes in daily function, note that as well. These materials can help a lawyer understand the sequence of events; they do not predetermine the outcome.

How Logue Law Group reviews semaglutide eye-injury matters

Logue Law Group handles Ozempic and Wegovy injury cases and works with leading national mass-tort firms on complex pharmaceutical matters. We review each potential case individually. The review considers the injury evidence, medication history, possible alternate causes, warnings, jurisdiction, and deadlines. Not every inquiry will meet legal or case criteria, and no result is promised. If further review is appropriate, counsel can explain the process and fee terms before any representation is agreed.

There is no fixed settlement value for NAION or other vision-loss claims. Any recovery depends on proof of causation and damages, the facts, applicable law, defenses, and the outcome of negotiations or litigation. Prior results in other matters do not predict an outcome in a new case.

Frequently asked questions

Has a regulator linked semaglutide to NAION?

In June 2025, EMA’s PRAC concluded that NAION is a very rare side effect of semaglutide medicines and recommended an EU product-information update. A regulator’s population-level safety review does not determine the cause of an individual’s symptoms.

Does the Ozempic label discuss diabetic retinopathy?

Yes. FDA prescribing information discusses diabetic-retinopathy complications observed in a clinical trial and monitoring for patients with a history of retinopathy. Retinopathy and NAION are distinct conditions.

What if I have vision loss but no confirmed diagnosis yet?

Seek medical evaluation promptly. A lawyer cannot diagnose an eye condition. A legal review is more meaningful after a clinician has evaluated the symptoms and records identify the diagnosis and treatment history.

How long do I have to bring a claim?

Time limits vary by state, claim type, and individual facts. Some deadlines may depend on when an injury was discovered or reasonably should have been discovered. Speak with a lawyer promptly about the rules that may apply to you.

Request a confidential case review
