Harrisburg Clergy Abuse Survivor Rights and Legal Options
Harrisburg Clergy Abuse Survivor Rights and Legal Options
Survivors of sexual abuse by clergy or another person connected with a religious organization in Harrisburg may have civil legal options. Filing deadlines depend on age, the facts, and current Pennsylvania law. This page provides local support and reporting contacts, but it cannot determine whether an individual claim is timely.
Diocese of Harrisburg victim assistance
The Diocese of Harrisburg lists Michelle Shae, Victim Assistance Coordinator, at 717-657-4804, ext. 234. For reporting suspected church-related abuse, the Diocese lists a toll-free hotline at 1-800-626-1608. A diocesan report is separate from contacting law enforcement, ChildLine, or an attorney.
Reporting suspected child abuse
For suspected child abuse or a child currently at risk, call Pennsylvania ChildLine at 1-800-932-0313. If a child is in immediate danger, call 911.
Pennsylvania civil claim deadlines
42 Pa.C.S. § 5533 includes special time rules for certain civil claims involving childhood sexual abuse. Whether a rule applies depends on statutory requirements and individual facts. Speak with a Pennsylvania attorney promptly about possible claims, potential defendants, and filing deadlines rather than relying on a general page to calculate time limits.
Preparing for a confidential consultation
- Write down approximate dates, places, institutions, and names involved, if known.
- Keep relevant records and communications.
- Ask about confidentiality, deadlines, possible claims, and survivor resources.
