Exceeding Max Speed by 26-30 MPH

It was the middle of the night, the streets were empty, and you needed to get home quickly, so you drove as fast as you could. Next thing you knew, the flashing lights of a police vehicle were reflected in your mirror. Then, the cop wrote you a citation: exceeding the maximum speed by 26-30 mph.

Speeding tickets are the most common traffic citations given in Pittsburgh, and those tickets can cause major problems. They can cost you points on your license, hefty fines, and high insurance premiums. You could even lose your driver’s license. This is where our attorneys at Logue Law Group can help you. We have the best Pittsburgh Criminal Defense Attorneys, and we can help you minimize these issues, or even avoid them altogether. We have the most experienced and skilled Criminal Lawyers in the Pittsburgh area.

Facts About Speeding

In Pittsburgh, you’re not legally allowed to drive over the speed limit. On expressways or streets that don’t have speed limit signs, you should follow the below-mentioned guidelines:

  • Expressways- 55 MPH
  • Nonresidential streets- 35 MPH
  • Residential streets- 25 MPH

Different tools are used to measure speed. You must be driving at least 6 MPH above the speed limit to be given a speeding ticket, unless you are driving through a school zone. In this instance, it’s possible to receive a speeding ticket for travelling as little as1 MPH over the posted speed limit.

Exceeding the Maximum Speed by 26-30 MPH

A conviction for going 26-30 MPH over the speed limit will result in 5 points being added to your driving record. If you were in a construction zone, you may also receive a 15-day license suspension.

Ways in Which the Police Can Measure Your Speed

  • By following your car and pacing the speed of your vehicle against the cop’s speedometer. He needs to follow you for a distance of no less than 3/8 of a mile before pulling you over.
  • By making use of a non-automatic tool reminiscent of a stopwatch that he uses to clock your car over a distance that is pre-determined and pre-measured. Planes and helicopters are often used for determining how fast cars on the ground are going, and a report radioed to the police in charge, who will then pull you over. Many times, this is referred to as a Manual Speed Trap

The device that is applied in both air and ground manual speed traps is usually a VASCAR device. These devices are not known to be particularly reliable, especially when employed for distances shorter than 500 feet. The law states that you cannot receive a ticket for speeding in a 55 MPH or slower zone unless your speed was 10 MPH or more over the posted limit when it was measured by a VASCAR device.

  • Radar guns may be used to measure your speed. In Pittsburgh, as in all of Pennsylvania, only the state police are allowed to use radar guns to catch speeders.
  • Automatic speed traps are driven by technology, which means fewer human mistakes. Both sides of the road will have been set with transmitters that automatically gauge the speed of passing cars, and send the data to a computer in the officer’s patrol car.

What do I do if the Cops Pull Me Over?

  • Be polite
  • Do not argue or let yourself show anger to the officer
  • Turn your car off, but do not get out of the vehicle
