What Would a Private Attorney Do for Me?
Your lawyer can review the documents you have received, identify legal questions affecting you, and help prepare for the next scheduled event. Discuss the scope at the beginning: whether you need advice about a protective-order proceeding, help organizing records, or guidance about your role in a criminal case. Representation depends on the circumstances and the firm’s ability to accept the matter.
Private counsel represents the retained client. The prosecutor represents the state in the criminal prosecution and makes prosecutorial decisions. Hiring a lawyer does not give a victim the power to order charges, require a dismissal, or guarantee a sentence. Tell counsel if your own conduct, a related case, or an existing attorney relationship may raise additional issues.
Wheeling and Ohio County Victim-Support Resources
The Wheeling Police Department’s Victim Advocacy Program describes assistance with criminal-justice information, referrals, accompaniment when needed, and compensation applications. The Ohio County Prosecuting Attorney’s official page also identifies the county victim coordinator. Ask the responsible office who will handle updates for your particular case.
For domestic violence support, YWCA Wheeling’s court-advocacy program describes accompaniment, information, and referrals. These public and community services are separate from a private engagement with Logue Law Group. Confirm current availability and the services offered directly with the program; a link does not mean the organizations are affiliated with the firm.
Before an Ohio County Hearing
Look at the case number, court name, date, and location on each notice. Ohio County’s magistrate, family, and circuit courts have different functions and office locations. The West Virginia Judiciary’s Ohio County directory is a starting point for the correct clerk. Follow the actual notice and confirm any uncertainty with the office handling the proceeding.
Bring a subpoena or hearing notice to counsel promptly. Ask whether you are required to attend, whom to contact about scheduling, and what preparation is appropriate. Do not assume a date has been canceled because someone informally told you the case might resolve.
Protection and Unwanted Contact
Domestic violence protection is a separate subject from the prosecution of a criminal charge. West Virginia uses domestic violence protective orders under its own law. Our Wheeling protective-order FAQs for victims discuss court locations, emergency protection, hearings, and expiration questions.
Bring any signed order and explain suspected violations or related proceedings. Preserve relevant information without putting yourself at risk to obtain it. Counsel can discuss legal options, while immediate threats and suspected crimes should be directed to the appropriate authorities.
Keep a Usable Record of the Harm
A brief timeline helps separate what you personally observed from what someone else told you. Retain original messages and records with their surrounding context. Identify potential witnesses without coaching their account. Ask counsel about sensitive information before distributing it to people who are not handling the matter.
Keep bills, receipts, income records, and insurance correspondence related to claimed losses. A description of the personal impact and documentation of a financial loss serve different purposes. Restitution and a compensation application also involve different decisions. The West Virginia Crime Victims Compensation Fund provides official application information; eligibility, deadlines, and other reimbursement sources must be considered. An award is not automatic.
Arrange a Consultation
When contacting the firm, identify the people involved for the conflict review, the next scheduled date, and the assistance you want. If the firm can take the matter, clarify the work included and who will communicate with you about each part of the case.
