Social Media Harm Parent Resource Center

A family facing possible social media harm needs a manageable starting point. This resource center separates immediate health needs, record organization, and legal review. You do not need to reconstruct years of online activity in a single day. Logue Law Group reviews potential injury claims involving Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland.

Start With Health and Safety

If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services. Otherwise, discuss concerning changes with a qualified health professional. A legal inquiry is not a substitute for care. Do not keep a child using a harmful account, expose them to distressing material, or delay protective steps to collect evidence.

The Surgeon General’s social media advisory addresses both benefits and risks. HHS’s May 2026 screen-use announcement identifies concerns such as withdrawal from offline activities and unsuccessful efforts to reduce use. These are reasons to seek guidance, not a diagnosis or proof of a lawsuit.

Have a Calm, Specific Conversation

Ask what the young person experiences online and what makes stopping difficult. Describe concrete observations instead of assigning blame. A useful note might distinguish a parent’s observation of missed sleep from the child’s description of an upsetting interaction. Record approximate dates honestly. Do not coach a child to adopt legal language or rehearse a particular account.

Create a Small Record Inventory

  1. Accounts: list platforms, usernames, approximate years of use, and whether access is available. Keep passwords out of the list.
  2. Care: list providers, facilities, and approximate treatment dates. Leave the medical records themselves in secure storage.
  3. School: identify attendance changes, accommodations, communications, and staff who may hold relevant records.
  4. Devices: note which phone, tablet, or computer was used and whether existing backups or screen-time reports are available.
  5. Costs: retain existing bills and receipts without assuming every expense is legally recoverable.

Preserve Without Making the Situation Worse

Keep original files and note their source. Screenshots can help explain context, but they may omit metadata or surrounding messages. Obtain records only through lawful access. If access has been lost, tell counsel; do not impersonate the account holder or bypass security. Ask about preservation before deleting relevant accounts or resetting devices, while prioritizing immediate safety.

Do not download or forward suspected child sexual abuse material. Record non-graphic identifying information when safe and seek appropriate reporting and legal guidance. Never ask a child to revisit harmful material to produce screenshots.

Prepare for the First Legal Conversation

Have a short timeline, the states involved, and any known deadline ready. Tell the firm if another lawyer is involved. Ask who may authorize access to records, how secure transfer works, what further investigation may be needed, and how fees and costs would be addressed if representation is offered. A consultation does not guarantee that the firm will accept the matter.
