Instagram Social Media Addiction and Injury Claims
An Instagram case review should distinguish image and video use, messages, account settings, and the dates of any reported changes in well-being. A family’s concern about body image or compulsive checking deserves careful attention without assuming that Instagram caused every symptom.
Separate the Instagram Experience From Other Meta Apps
A young person may use Instagram and Facebook through connected settings while experiencing them differently. Identify which profile and device were used for each relevant period. Keep available information about account changes, notifications, safety reports, and the feature involved. If a family member recalls an upsetting recommendation, distinguish that recollection from a saved record. Do not ask the young person to recreate the feed.
Records to Discuss With Counsel
- Approximate account creation date and any earlier usernames.
- Existing records of relevant Instagram activity and reports made to the platform.
- Dates when body-image concerns, sleep disruption, or other symptoms were noticed and when care was sought.
- Whether Facebook or other apps were also used during the same period.
Using the Platform’s Official Data Tools
Meta provides information-download controls for Facebook and Instagram. Its 2026 Meta Account rollout means labels may vary between accounts. Follow the current official controls and keep a note of the account and date range selected. An export is not a guarantee that every historical interaction is included. See the official data and account guidance.
Meta’s April 2026 announcement describes its transition from Accounts Center to Meta Account.
Allegations Are Not Findings of Liability
The October 24, 2024 federal school-district order describes compulsive-use allegations involving Instagram. That order addresses a different plaintiff group and does not prove an individual family’s claim.
Legal review must address the actual conduct alleged, the documented injury, and other potential causes. The existence of national litigation does not automatically include a particular user or guarantee compensation. Current case-specific orders and applicable state law must be checked.
Does an Instagram account download prove causation?
No. It can help document activity, but it does not determine why an injury occurred. Medical history, other events, the conduct alleged, and applicable law must also be considered.
Health care remains the priority. Do not delay treatment or continue harmful exposure to build a claim. Our parent resource center provides a practical starting point.
