How to Preserve Digital Records Safely After an Online Safety Incident
A family may want to keep a clear record of an online safety incident while prioritizing a child’s safety and emotional well-being. There is no single evidence checklist for every situation. If a child may be at immediate risk, contact emergency services or law enforcement.
Non-explicit records that may help
If safe and appropriate, a parent or guardian may note approximate dates, account names or user IDs, the platform or device involved, when a report was submitted, and any confirmation number or response received. Keep ordinary account notices and support records in their original form. A short factual timeline written from memory can help reduce repeated questioning.
Do not continue using an account or interacting with another user solely to gather proof. Do not access an account without authorization, impersonate anyone, or attempt to investigate a suspected offender. Ask law enforcement or qualified counsel how to handle a particular record, especially if an investigation is active.
Do not copy or share sexual material involving a minor
Never download, forward, email, upload, repost, or otherwise distribute sexual images or videos of a minor. Do not attach such content to a website inquiry or send it to a law office. If it exists, do not create additional copies; ask law enforcement or qualified counsel for safe instructions. Keep notes to basic identifiers and non-explicit information.
Support the child
Avoid repeated or leading questions. Let trained investigators and child-support professionals guide any interview. Do not blame a child for being contacted, responding, or using a platform. If distress continues, consider appropriate mental-health or child advocacy resources.
